Membership
All gardeners must be members for insurance and safety reasons and must sign the Gardener’s Code of Conduct.
If you are interested in being involved in the garden, you can:
- join as a General Member, which gives access to 10 shared plots maintained collectively by all members; and/or
- join our waiting list to be allocated an individual plot and become a Plot-holder Member (please note: there is high demand for the 83 individual plots in the Garden, all of which are presently allocated).
More information about both options is outlined below. If you are interested in becoming either a General Member or a Plot-Holder Member please continue reading and then complete the KCG Registration Form.
Who Can Join?
To become a member, you must:
- Live in Kensington (3031 postcode area within the City of Melbourne with proof of address required - please note: Flemington 3031 not eligible)
- Be 18 years or older (children are very welcome with adult family members)
- Agree to participate in at least two working bees per year (or do an approved alternative task)
- Sign and follow the Gardener’s Code of Conduct.
Join as a General Member (without a Plot):
You don’t need an individual plot to be part of KCG.
General Members help maintain shared areas, attend working bees and contribute to a welcoming community.
General Membership is free for 2026, but a small fee will be set in future years. As a General Member you will have access to 10 shared plots. You can become a General Member and also join the waitlist to become a Plot-holder Member once a plot becomes available. We can progress General Membership straight away.
Join the Waitlist to become a Plot-holder Member:
All individual plots are currently allocated.
Individual plots are offered in order of application date. When an individual plot becomes available, the KCG Committee will contact the next person on the waiting list. If no response is received within a timeframe set out in the KCG management plan, the plot will be offered to the next applicant.
An individual plot can be shared by a household as long as at least one Plot-holder Member is always present to supervise the other people on site. Multiple plots will not be issued to the same household.
Plot Sizes and Fees
Plot sizes vary from large, medium to small. Each has a different annual fee in accordance with its size. Plot fees are set by the KCG Committee and approved by the City of Melbourne and are reviewed annually. The current plot sizes and fees are as follows:
